Social Studies Lesson Plans

Creating Compelling Social Studies Lesson Plans

Executive summary about social studies lesson plans by Kacy Suther

Social studies lesson plans. Today's kids are constantly bombarded by fast moving images, brightly colored ads and so much more. Comparatively, not well. For younger children, social studies lesson plans that include games or interactive elements are a really great way to keep them engaged.

The average person's attention span is only about 20 minutes. For children, you're lucky if their attention lasts that long. It also means that you have to gain and retain their attention for an even longer period of time.

Now, coming up with an hour and a half of world history lesson plans isn't the hard part- the hard part is making sure their minds don't wander off in the first third of class.

As you plan your class, be sure to alternate lecture or reading time with activities such as worksheets. Including visual exercises and experiential learning techniques to your lectures might really make the difference for kids with different learning styles. If you run out of steam, don't be afraid to consult other resources to help you formulate your lesson plans. Better to seek a little help than bore your students to tears.

Homeschool Lesson Plans Made Simple

Executive summary about social studies lesson plans by Kayley Kenzie

Homeschooling your child using theme-based learning is a fun way to teach and learn. Young children might prefer themes around things like apples, the zoo, birds, stars, or a favorite author. Whenever you tailor your homeschool lesson plans around a theme, learning becomes a lot more fun and creative.

It's not difficult to integrate themes into homeschool lesson plans. Let you child have some freedom in choosing themes for the lessons.

Let's say you chose apples for your thematic unit. Learning about Johnny Appleseed could be a lesson for Social Studies. We could study books about apples. We could sing songs about apples. We could finish off with a cooking lesson and make apple bread or apple sauce.

The important thing to remember when you're putting together theme-based homeschool lesson plans is to use your child's interests.
